About the Whole Systems Demonstrator Programme

The Whole System Demonstrator (WSD) Programme is a two year research project funded by the Department of Health to find out how technology can help people manage their own health while maintain their independence. The WSD is the largest randomised control trial (RCT) of telecare and telehealth to date. The project covers 6,000 patients over three sites in England (Cornwall, Kent and Newham).

There are enormous savings to be made from the implementation of telehealth that could be reinvested in patient care; we estimate that these savings could be over £1bn per year which combined with the improvement in clinical outcomes demonstrated in the WSD results makes the adoption of this approach a real and pressing necessity.
